my review criteria

i’m using 10 categories to evaluate games — each of which uses a star metric 0-5 — for a total possible score of 50.

1. gameplay

core game mechanics, controls, playability, etc.

2. graphics & visuals

quality of graphics, art style, level of detail, immersiveness, overall visual presentation

3. sound & music

the use of sound effects & music in enhancing the game experience

4. story & narrative

plot, character development, style of storytelling, overall ability to engage through narrative

5. progression & pacing

how well the game introduces challenges, learning curve, pacing of the story, overall sense of flow & progression

6. originality

how unique does this game feel overall?

7. ramp time

how long does it take me to get hooked?

8. replayability

do i suspect i will be compelled to replay this some day, whether in one day or 5 years?

9. enjoyment

more of an instinctual rating on how much i enjoyed the experience of playing

10. broader impact & relevance

social/cultural influences, ability to foster community, etc.
